Coach Lelei Alofa Fonoimoana (Lelei Moore)
Lelei Alofa Fonoimoana, also known by her married name Lelei Moore, is an American swimmer who, at age 15, helped set an American record in the 400 medley relay and, at age 17, competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. She earned a silver medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay and placed seventh in the 100-meter butterfly, missing a medal by only five-tenths of a second.
At her alma mater, BYU, she earned 11 All-America awards — nearly twice as many as any other BYU female athlete. She held or holds five school records at sea level: 50, 100, and 200-meter butterfly, as well as the 100 and 200-meter individual medley.
In her freshman season, Lelei scored all of BYU's 64 points at the AIAW National Championships, collecting five All-America awards. As a sophomore, she earned three more. As a junior, she earned two, then sat out the 1979–80 season to train for the Olympic trials.
In her senior year, Lelei — a pre-med major — won her 11th All-America award in the 100-meter butterfly. She was named Outstanding Senior Female Athlete by the Cougar Club and selected to the AIAW All-Region Team. Once the conference began awarding honors in her junior year, she led the All-Conference list for her final two seasons.
Since graduating from BYU, Lelei has worked professionally as an assistant swim coach at UCLA, a senior lifeguard, a therapist, and a dance instructor.
