Swimmer Commitment

The swimmer’s commitment to Surfside Swim Team means participating in training 3-5x times per week year-round, and competing in swim meets with the team.

Each swimmer is responsible for the following:

  • Check the "Events" and "Workout Info" pages for updates.
  • Arrive at workouts on time with all equipment.
  • Compete in swim meets, especially if recommended by your coach.
  • Follow your coach’s directions during meets and workouts.
  • Wear team suit at meets and practice suits for workouts.
  • Communicate with your coach! Ask for help to become a stronger swimmer.
  • Keep track of your times – check on "My Meet Results" regularly.
  • Leave valuables at home. Surfside is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Required Swim Gear

  • Goggles: Protect eyes from treated water.
  • Kick Boards: Bring to every workout.
  • Fins: Short swimmer fins only.
  • Pull Buoys: Bring your own.
  • Caps: Keep hair back and reduce drag.
  • Swim Snorkels (optional): May be required for alignment training.

Label all equipment with swimmer’s name in permanent marker.

Surfside Swim Team Groups

Swimmers are assigned to one of four groups based on skill, maturity, and dedication:

  • C - Group: Beginning swimmers.
  • B - Group: Some competitive swim training.
  • A - Group: More advanced competitive experience.
  • Seniors: Extensive experience and leadership responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements

  • C - Group: Practice 2–3 times/week.
  • B - Group: Practice 3 times/week. Compete in 2 meets per season and Champs.
  • A - Group: Practice 4–5 times/week. Compete in 3 meets per season and Champs.
  • Seniors: Practice 4–5 times/week. Compete in all available meets. Help newer swimmers.

Moving Up

Group changes require Head Coach approval and are based on ability and dedication.

To move from Cs to Bs:

  • 50-yard freestyle under 0:50 (non-stop).
  • Basic skills in all four strokes.

To move from Bs to As:

  • Ten 100 Freestyle on 2:00 + Five 100 IM on 2:30.
  • Strong fundamentals and starts/turns.
  • Regular attendance and maturity.

To move from As to Seniors:

  • 100 Freestyle under 1:20 + 100 IM under 1:30.
  • Superior technique in all strokes.
  • 4x per week minimum attendance.
  • Meet participation and leadership.

Swimmer Code of Conduct

Surfside is committed to a positive, safe, and supportive environment, following both this code and USA Swimming's guidelines.

Respect

  • Respect coaches, teammates, officials, volunteers, and parents.
  • Be courteous and fair to everyone.
  • Respect all team and pool property.

Teamwork

  • Be a positive, supportive teammate.
  • Celebrate teammates’ achievements.
  • Participate in team events and communicate with coaches.

Conduct

  • Be punctual and prepared.
  • Follow coach instructions.
  • No inappropriate language or behavior.
  • No alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs.
  • No bullying, harassment, or cyberbullying.
  • No physical misconduct or horseplay.
  • Show sportsmanship and follow USA Swimming rules.
