September 13, 2021

  1. Call to Order
  • The August 9, 2021, minutes were approved.
  1. President’s Report – Case Spencer
  • The board approved purchasing insurance to cover the board members.
  • The board adopted USA Swimming’s Athlete Protection Protocols.
  • Case is going to meet with the coaches before an upcoming workout to discuss USA Swimming’s Athlete Protection Protocols.
  • Tyler from the Redondo pool has asked that Surfside continues asking Covid screening questions before each workout.
  • The city of Manhattan Beach has said they are not requiring testing or proof of vaccination for the swimmers. John is going to ask if that applies to the coaches as well.
  • Case suggested the board start thinking about a holiday party for the swimmers with a parent meeting to vote on the board for 2022. It was decided that with Covid, an outside gathering would be best. John is going to check with the City of Manhattan Beach to see if we can do a movie night on Friday, December 10.
  1. Head Coach Issues – John York
  • Coach Katie’s last day is tomorrow (September 14th). She is going back to school. Coach Jennifer will be taking her place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Redondo pool. Jennifer helped this summer with the beach workouts and John feels she will be a good fit at Surfside.
  1. Vice President – Elisa Nye
  • The family beach picnic took place on August 23rd. Attendance was light, but everyone had a good time playing games and eating.
  • Elisa has identified a potential new board member and she is interested in participating. She regularly attends practice and engages in conversation with the coaches and parents. Elisa is going to discuss with John if she would be a good fit. She would take on the position of Meet Coordinator. If the board moves forward with this new member, she and Elisa will meet with Drew to learn the responsibilities and duties of the position.
  • Elisa is moving forward on getting an updated logo. Kayo is a talented artist, and she is looking into what’s been done previously and coming up with some ideas. Once a logo is in place, Elisa will work with the Swim Guy to get some new Surfside spirit wear (caps, PJ bottoms, hats, etc.)
  1. Treasurer – Sandra Ota
  • Sandra has not been receiving any bills or Wells Fargo statements. Also, Surfside’s CPA has been unresponsive regarding an issue with the 2017 taxes. Sandra is going to follow-up on these items.
  • Elisa is going to forward the Google folder with past bank statements to Sandra
  • Sandra is meeting with Case tomorrow night to pay coaches, etc. since it is her first time.
  1. Membership – Michelle Brill & Kelley Mayeda (absent)
  • The two recent tryouts were a success. 26 new swimmers have joined Surfside.
  • Kayo and Eileen trained at the tryouts and after training at another tryout towards the end of 2021, they should be able to take over the duties.
  1. Secretary - Eileen Brown
  • Nothing new.
