Surfside Board Meeting Minutes

August 11, 2022

Present:            Elisa Nye, Paula Skorin, Kayo Libiano, Eileen Brown, John York

Absent:            Rich Fernandez, Margo Trone

 

  1. The Board approved the July 7, 2022 Meeting Minutes.
  2. Coaching:
    • Going forward, communication with all coaches will go through Head Coach John. In turn, John will distribute pertinent information to the appropriate coaches.
    • Assistant Head Coach position: We currently have two outside candidates who have expressed interest. Once the job description is finalized, it will be circulated to all the current coaches as well as any outside candidates.
  3. Swim Meets:
    • Surfside had two dual meets in July (with SOBA on July 15th and the Bay Club on July 27th). Both meets went very well.
    • Regional meet on August 13th at the new Torrance Aquatic Center:
    • There are still some open volunteer slots. Paula will send out another request to parents and we will look on deck that day for any last-minute volunteers.
    • Surfside has been invited to set up our pop-up tents, etc. on Friday night so that our team has a good group location during Saturday’s meet.
    • Paula will email a one-page info sheet to the parents. The meet line-up with heats and lanes for each swimmer will be posted at the event.
    • Paula and Margo will meet with Drew to learn the meet coordinator duties that are involved when Surfside hosts swim meets at our pool. (No home meets are scheduled for the near future.)
  4. Membership Status: Two upcoming tryouts – Friday, September 9th & 23rd. Kayo has been getting a lot of responses, so it should be a good turnout. Mary will conduct the tryouts to make sure the kids are solid C (or above) swimmers.
  5. JG Prep Class update: The Board still needs to schedule lessons learned and planning for the 2023 program.
  6. Team gear updates: Coach Robert’s gear has been ordered. Surfside merchandise is in stock at the Swim Guy. Kayo will ask the Swim Guy to bring some to the regional meet on Saturday.
  7. Banking/Financials:
  • Rich has investigated purchasing board insurance. It will cost approximately $6,000 per year. Since Rich could not attend tonight’s meeting, the board will decide next month if we want to move forward.
  • Rich has confirmed that our team insurance through USA Swimming covers the beach swim workouts for all Surfside swimmers.
