Surfside Board Meeting Minutes

September 7, 2023

7:00 pm

Present:           Elisa Nye, Kayo Libiano, Margo Trone, Eileen Brown, John York

Absent:            Rich Fernandez

  1. The Board approved the August 10, 2023 Meeting Minutes.

  1. Mira Costa Pool
  1. Management of the pool has changed from the City of Manhattan Beach to the MBX Foundation.
  2. The MBX Foundation is in the process of hiring a facilities manager and lifeguards.
  3. MBX plans to raise Surfside’s pool rental rates by more than double.
  4. Until the staffing has been finalized, MBX would like us to sign an agreement that Surfside will hold harmless MBX if something should happen while we use the pool.
  • The Board is concerned that our insurance may not cover us if we sign this agreement. Elisa and Rich are looking into this.
  • The city took all the first aid equipment with them when they stopped managing the pool. MBX has not replaced the first aid equipment. We need to be prepared in case of an accident.
  1. Surfside will have to put in/take out lane lines at the beginning and end of practices. The lifeguards have done this in the past, allowing Surfside to utilize the entire hour for working out.
  2. Elisa and John are going to work with MBX to see if we can resolve these issue as soon as possible.
  3. Until the issues with MBX are resolved, the Redondo pool has offered Surfside practice time on Monday and Wednesday evenings. In addition, the Sunday morning practices at Redondo will increase to one hour (half for stroke work, half for conditioning).

  1. Membership
  1. The tryouts scheduled for tomorrow (September 8) and next Friday (September 15) will be postponed until we solve the administrative challenges we are having with the Mira Costa pool.
  2. With the increase in pool rates, Surfside will most likely need to raise dues at the beginning of 2024. Rich and Kayo will analyze trends from past years to see when swimmers tend to join/quit and figure out how much we will need to increase the dues.
  3. Team Unify double-billed members in September. Surfside billed the members, not realizing that Team Unify would automatically renew (and bill) our members’ annual membership with USA Swimming. Kayo will get refunds processed as soon as possible.
  4. The board discussed creating a Google document for new members to inform the coaches of any special needs and support required for the swimmer.
