Surfside Board Meeting Minutes
January 11, 2024
7:15 pm
Present: Elisa Nye, Kayo Libiano, Margo Trone, Eileen Brown, John York
Absent: Rich Fernandez
- The Board approved the December 21, 2023 Meeting Minutes.
- Pool Situation
- We continue to work with some key contacts at the Manhattan Beach School District. The main issue continues to be the district’s lack of both a pool supervisor and lifeguard staff. The district is actively seeking job applicants, but it will be another couple of months until staff are hired and trained for us to return to the Mira Costa pool.
- Redondo Union continues to be very helpful in finding time in their schedule for some extra Surfside practices. Currently, Surfside is practicing Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday at the Redondo pool.
- We have added practices on Monday and Wednesday nights at Begg Pool.
- Coaching
- Elisa has sent the 2024 contracts to Lelei, Robert and Nikki to review and sign.
- After John talks with Beth and Mary about the change from monthly rates to hourly rates, Elisa will send the 2024 contracts for them to review and sign.
- Elisa and John continue to work on pool and coach availability for the JG prep program.
- Nikki needs to be added to USA Swimming as a coach as soon as possible.
- John will follow up with coaches (Lelei, Robert and now Beth) who are out of compliance on required certifications.
- Swim Meets
- John continues to work with coaches from Dolphins and Bay Club to schedule dual meets.
- John reported that participation in a new league looks promising beginning in March.
- John will check USA Swimming’s schedule of upcoming meets to see what might work for Surfside to attend.
- The board discussed different options for getting more volunteers at swim meets. Once we have a meet on the books, we will discuss again.
- Membership
- The team’s USA Swimming membership has been registered for 2024.
- Elisa confirmed with Kayo that she and Rich will update the board at the March meeting regarding the analysis of the minimum/maximum number of swimmers Surfside needs to achieve our budgeting needs and decide if we must increase our quarterly membership dues.
- The board agreed that membership rates should not increase until our pool situation is resolved.
- Changes have been made to the new member intake form to address any special needs that coaches should know about.
- Website
- Margo will provide recommendations for updating the website to the board in February.
- Financials
- Rich had emailed the board an update on the 2023 actuals vs. budget.
- The 2024 budget is in process. Rich will provide the budget at the February meeting.
