Board Meeting - February 8, 2024
Surfside Board Meeting Minutes
February 8, 2024
7:00 pm
Present: Elisa Nye, Kayo Libiano, Margo Trone, Eileen Brown, John York
Absent: Rich Fernandez
- The Board approved the January 11, 2024 Meeting Minutes.
- Pool Situation
- We continue to work with some key contacts at the Manhattan Beach School District. The main issue continues to be the district’s lack of both a pool supervisor and lifeguard staff. The district is actively seeking job applicants. We are hopeful that the Mira Costa pool will hire and train staff for us to return by June.
- Redondo Union continues to be very helpful in finding time in their schedule for some extra Surfside practices. Currently, Surfside is practicing Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday at the Redondo pool. Beginning next week, the team will also be adding Monday practices at Redondo Union back on the schedule. Surfside practice times will be earlier in the evenings since the high school water polo season has ended. It may change again when the high school swim season begins.
- We will continue to use Begg Pool on Wednesday evenings.
- Coaching
- The coaches are being switched from independent contractors to non-exempt hourly employees. Elisa has been working with a lawyer drafting new contracts and arranging what we need to have for employees in California (workers comp, time sheets, etc.) We are hoping these new contracts will be ready to implement at the beginning of Q2.
- Surfside will not offer a JG prep program this year because of the lack of pool availability.
- Kayo will add Nikki to USA Swimming as a Surfside coach as soon as possible.
- John will follow up with coaches (Lelei and Robert) who are out of compliance with required certifications.
- Swim Meets
- Surfside is hosting a meet against the Dolphins on Saturday, February 24 at the Redondo pool.
- John reported that participation in a new league continues to look promising, starting in March. All the meets in this league will be away meets.
- John reported that USA Swimming’s meets do not work well for a small team such as Surfside. Kids would have to make qualifying times and he believes we would only get a few swimmers to go to these meets. John will continue to keep his eyes out for a local swim meet we can attend.
- Margo announced her resignation from the board. Her kids have moved on to different sports and she needs to concentrate her energy on those teams.
- Membership
- Kayo and Rich will update the board at the March meeting regarding the analysis of the minimum/maximum number of swimmers Surfside needs to achieve our budgeting needs and decide if we must increase our quarterly membership dues.
- Changes have been made to the new member intake form to address any special needs that coaches should know about.
- Website
- Margo recommends keeping the website as is for the time being. The photos may be old, but the information is current.
- Financials
- The 2024 budget is in process. Rich will need to add in the new costs for the changeover in coach employment status (payroll service, workers comp, etc.)
