Surfside Board Meeting Minutes

June 27, 2024

Present:             Elisa Nye, Kayo Libiano, Jered Lindsay, Ramya Sivasubramanian, Eileen Brown, John York

Absent:            Rich Fernandez

 

  1. The Board approved the May 23, 2024 Meeting Minutes.
  1. Pool Situation
  1. We will continue to practice throughout the summer at the Redondo Union pool on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings, as well as Sunday mornings.
  2. Beach workouts are on Wednesday evenings at 22nd Street in Hermosa.
  1. Coaching
  1. Status on shift from independent contractor to employee
  • Timing for implementing the new system has been delayed. John, Elisa, and Rich are planning to meet in July with the coaches to review the new system and how it is going to work.
  • The workers’ comp insurance is in place.
  1. Updates on staff
  • In mid-June, Kayo sent Coach Nikki the link and all the information needed so that she can be added as a Surfside coach to the USA Swimming website. As soon as that happens, Nikki will get all her required certifications.
  • Beth will be taking some time off. Her coaching duties will be covered by other current Surfside coaches.
  • Melissa will be assisting at the beach workouts.
  1. Discussions were continued regarding the coach to swimmer ratio.
  1. Swim Meets
  1. The SCSL (South Central Swim League) championship meet is this weekend June 29-30.
  • We will have enough volunteers to time.
  • Jared will bring two Surfside canopies to provide some much-needed shade for the swimmers and families.
  • We will also have bottled water and snacks for our swimmers.
  • Special Surfside “Champs” t-shirts will be distributed to the swimmers.
  1. John has been working with Kathy at SOBA to get a dual meet on the calendar soon.
  1. Membership
  1. All swimmers’ squad assignments have been updated in Team Unify.
  2. The next tryout date has been set for Friday, July 12th. Kayo will get the word out to those on the waiting list and get swimmers signed up. Eileen will help Kayo at the tryouts.
  3. Summer Beach Party
  • Wednesday, July 17th, 5:30-7:30pm
  • Eileen will coordinate the logistics. Emails will be sent tomorrow to all the members. Flyers will be given to the coaches to pass out at the Champs meet as well as at practices.
  • John will organize activities/games for the swimmers and their families.
  1. 2024 Scholarship Awards
  1. We have two recipients this year: Rylee Tretiak and Naomi Kim. Elisa will send emails informing them of their acceptance. We will be presenting the awards at the Summer Beach Party on July 17th.
  2. Elisa will inform Tom Tournat that we have two recipients and what day they will be awarded. Tom said a family member will be there for the awards presentation.
  3. Rich will get checks for the two award recipients.
