Board Meeting - October 17, 2024
Surfside Board Meeting Minutes
October 17, 2024
7:45 pm
Present: Elisa Nye, Kayo Libiano, Jered Lindsay, Ramya Sivasubramanian, Eileen Brown, John York
Absent: Rich Fernandez
- The Board approved the September 19, 2024 Meeting Minutes.
- Pool Situation
- We are still hopeful that someday we can return to the Mira Costa pool, but no progress has been made to hire lifeguards.
- We will continue to practice at the Redondo Union pool on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, as well as Sunday mornings and at Begg Pool on Wednesday and Friday evenings.
- Coaching
- Status on shift from independent contractor to employee
- Direct deposit has been in place for a month and there have not been any problems.
- John and Rich are meeting next week to get any outstanding documents completed and signed by the coaches.
- Updates on staff
- No updates on new coaching candidates.
- Mary’s request for a headset (so that her swimmers can hear her better) was approved. Mary can order the one she likes. If it works well and other coaches want one, we can order more at that time.
- Nikki is going to help Mary coach the C+ group on Tuesdays. Overcrowding has been an issue, so it will be nice to have a second coach.
- John spoke with Lelei about teen retention ideas, and they decided that teens have so many activity options in high school and it’s nice to try out new things. We love to see teens at workouts, but understand they have hectic schedules, and we might not see very many at each practice.
- The coaches will pick a date for the annual pumpkin races.
- Swim Meets
- SCSL meets:
- Last week’s meet was a success. Swimmers did well and it’s nice to see parents starting to get to know each other and hang out together at the meets.
- The upcoming meets are on 11/2, 11/23, and champs on 1/25-26/2025.
- The meets are going to change a little since they tend to go over their scheduled pool time.
- Shortening warm-ups.
- Meets will start a little earlier.
- Swimmers who have “no times” will not be in the long-distance events.
- 500- and 1000-yard free events will be limited to one heat per gender (10 swimmers).
- Relays may be limited.
- The other local teams are not available for dual meets this fall.
- Elisa is going to talk with Romi about getting the Redondo pool for another intramural meet.
- Jered has talked to a few swim parents about training to become meet marshals. Parents will be credited $10/hr. for any training needed as well as any meets they work.
- Membership
- Last weekend’s tryouts resulted in four new B swimmers joining the team. Another four candidates are trying out this weekend.
- Rich and Kayo continue to work on the membership analysis. We hope to know by April if we need to increase membership dues.
- The holiday party will be at Begg Pool on Friday, December 6 (5-7pm).
- Invitations will go out next month.
- Kayo is going to follow-up with the Swim Guy regarding possible giveaway options.
- John will bring pool toys and lead games.
