Surfside Board Meeting Minutes

January 7, 2025

Present:           Elisa Nye, Rich Fernandez, Ramya Sivasubramanian/Jered Lindsay, Yvonne Abt, John York

Absent:            Kayo Libiano & Eileen Brown

 

  1. Board Members
  1. The board approved the meeting minutes of December 12, 2024.
  2. The board discussed the addition of Yvonne Abt to the board. She will help with marketing & communications.
  3. Board members who need to renew their certifications through USA Swimming will follow up.
  1. Pool Situation
  1. We will continue with the current schedule at RUHS and Begg Pool for the month of January.
  2. RUHS will be closed on Monday, January 20 in observance of MLK Jr. holiday. The C, C+, and B groups will practice at Begg Pool that evening 6-7pm.
  3. RUHS will be closed on Thursday, January 23 because of a high school water polo game. The B, A, and Senior groups will practice at Begg Pool that evening 8-9pm.
  1. Coaching
  1. John will follow up with any coaches who have concerns regarding the changes stemming from the transition to the new payroll system. Opportunities for more hours are available, like attending meets and/or special events. Private lessons for swimmers who are not quite ready for Surfside is also a possibility.
  2. The kids really enjoyed last weekend’s Polar Plunge at the beach.
  1. Swim Meets
  1. SCSL Champs meet is coming up January 25-26, 2025.
  • 22 Surfside swimmers have signed up to date. Ramya will send another reminder this week.
  • Ramya will be coordinating volunteer sign-ups for timers and a meet marshal. It was also decided that there will be a volunteer position for someone to transport and set up our Surfside canopy. We may add a few food/drink volunteer spots as well.
  • Kayo has ordered 50 special “Champs” caps for the meet.
  1. We hope to have intramural meets every quarter of 2025. The kids enjoy it, and the parent races are a favorite.
  1. Membership
  1. Kayo has completed the 2025 USA Swimming membership renewal for all Surfside swimmers.
  2. Kayo has been cleaning up the Surfside membership account and will provide an update at the next meeting.
  3. Kayo sent an email to all those on the waitlist. We are planning to have the next tryout in late March when the weather is a little warmer. However, if someone is coming from a different team or is a sibling of a current member and is used to swimming in the cold, we will have individual tryouts as needed.
  4. Rich and Kayo continue to work on membership analysis. They will have a recommendation in March regarding membership rate increases.
  1. Financials
  1. Rich will have a 2025 budget for the board to see by the end of the week. The board will review it at the February meeting.
  2. Rich has renewed the liability insurance for the board members.
